Moon Phases 2026

All 2026 new moons, first quarters, full moons and last quarters - with exact UTC and Central European Time. Calculated with the standard algorithm from Jean Meeus, Astronomical Algorithms (accuracy ±1-2 minutes) and cross-checked against the 2026 solar and lunar eclipses.

Times valid worldwide (UTC), plus CET/CEST for the DACH region Generated 2026-08-21 with Meeus ch.49

The eight moon phases

The lunar cycle - a synodic month of 29.53 days - runs through eight primary phases.

  1. New Moon

The moon is between Earth and the Sun; the lit side faces away from us. Traditional time for rest and planning.

  2. Waxing Crescent

A thin sliver grows on the right. Growth energy is traditionally considered to be rising.

  3. First Quarter

Half of the disc is lit. A traditional turning point in the cycle toward growth.

  4. Waxing Gibbous

More than half lit, still growing. Good time for planting and transplanting in traditional practice.

  5. Full Moon

The whole disc is lit. Traditionally favored for harvesting and gathering.

  6. Waning Gibbous

Light begins to recede from the right. Traditionally a settling, pruning time.

  7. Last Quarter

Half lit again, waning side. Traditional end-of-growth turning point.

  8. Waning Crescent

A thin sliver remains on the left. Time for pruning, weeding and soil work.

Special lunar events in 2026

Four eclipses occur in 2026, all connected to moon phases:

  • Feb 17 - Annular solar eclipse (new moon)
  • Mar 3 - Total lunar eclipse (full moon)
  • Aug 12 - Total solar eclipse (new moon)
  • Aug 28 - Partial lunar eclipse (full moon)

Eclipse dates verified against NASA's eclipse catalog (five millennium canon).

Gardening by the moon

  • Waxing moon - sow, plant, transplant
  • Full moon - harvest and gather
  • Waning moon - prune, weed, soil work
  • New moon - rest and plan

Haircut & beauty

  • Waxing moon - cuts encourage growth
  • Waning moon - cuts keep shape longer
  • Full / new moon - traditional rest days

Sleep & mood

  • Track sleep notes around full and new moon
  • Log one-tap mood entries per phase
  • Review patterns locally - data stays on device
